Tests and challenges in round 2 of Britcar

Team BRIT returned to Silverstone this weekend for the second round of the Britcar Championship.

Military veterans Warren McKinlay and Martyn Compton took to the wheel of the team’s Aston Martin V8 Vantage, lining up against 30 other teams.

During testing on Friday, both drivers showed strong, consisted lap times in the Aston, expertly set up by Team BRIT’s crew led by Race Engineer Al Locke.

Practice and qualifying on Saturday was wet, but the rain soon stopped, with winds quickly drying the track, so tyres were changed during qualifying. A packed pit box blocked the team in, leaving Martyn out for longer than planned.  Warren therefore suffered with tyres that he did not have time to warm up, and the team were pushed back to P11 by the end of qualifying.

Race 1 got underway in the morning and impressive driving from Martyn brought the team up 5 places on just the first lap.  By the time he handed over to Warren he was in 8th. Warren gave a solid performance and brought the team home in 5th.

The team were confident at the start of Race 2, lining up 5th on the grid. An electrical issue on the 2nd lap put the car in ‘limp mode’ to protect it, confining Warren to third gear to allow the Aston to safely get back to the pits.

The crew worked tirelessly to diagnose the fault and fix the car, but the time taken meant the team were pushed a long way back and sadly could not be competitive, finishing in 10th place.

CEO and Founder Dave Player said, “Luck wasn’t on our side on Saturday.  After suffering significantly with our qualifying position as a result of a disorganised pit lane, we then faced an electrical fault that quashed our chances of a decent finish.

“We’re taking so many positives from the race, however.  Our drivers are showing that with each race they’re getting more and more confident and demonstrating even more impressive driving.  Alongside them, our crew performed in the way we expect – overcoming the odds and battling against every challenge to keep us out on track.

“It was a fantastic day and we were pleased to welcome so many supporters to our garage, including the CEO of our title sponsor, Brit Insurance who came to cheer us on with his family.”
